Krillion Answers | How to Think Rare, Not Just Guess

This page is about strategy, not spoilers, and I want to be upfront about that before anything else. Krillion's prompts change daily and the answer sets are huge, so memorizing past answers won't get you far. What actually helps is understanding how rarity works and training yourself to reach past your first instinct, which honestly took me way too long to figure out.

The one mistake everyone makes

Krillion's FAQ has a name for the biggest trap, and it's "too clever," defined as the go to obscure pick that isn't actually that obscure. Here's what happens: a prompt asks for something, your first answer feels too obvious, so you reach for the clever deep cut, but so does everyone else. The answer that feels smart to you feels smart to ten thousand other players too, which makes it common, which makes it useless. A rare answer has to be rare for everyone, not just rare relative to the obvious answer.

Think past your first two responses

Since rarity is scored against how often a word or name turns up in what people read and write, your whole job is to land on a correct answer that few people will type. So here's a mental rule of thumb that works for me. Your first answer is what most players type, so drop it. But your second answer is the too clever pick, it feels rare but everyone shares it, so drop that too. And your third and fourth answers are where the depth actually is, because that's where you find the genuinely uncommon answer that's still correct.

Specific beats generic

A specific, real, slightly obscure answer will almost always be rarer than a generic category. "A bird" is common, but a specific species few people can name is rare, so when a prompt lets you choose how granular to be, go granular. Just keep it correct, because a wrong answer scores nothing no matter how rare it is.

Use the alias system

Krillion accepts aliases for a lot of answers, because people call the same thing different names, and the developer's example is Threebanded Sheephead, which is also known as sea donkey. If a prompt points that way, a lesser known alias can be far rarer than the common name. So if you know a regional or niche name for something, that's often a deeper answer than the standard one, and stuff like that.

Watch the timer, 25 seconds goes fast

You have 25 seconds per prompt and one shot, which is not long enough to brainstorm for minutes. The players who sink deepest have usually trained themselves to move past the obvious answer within the first few seconds and spend the rest on the third and fourth answer zone. If nothing rare comes, a correct common answer still beats a wrong guess, so don't freeze up.

A note on daily answer lists: this site deliberately does not publish same day answers. Krillion is more fun when you find them yourself, and the answer sets rotate anyway. For a look back at past prompts, see the archive guide.

For past answers, use the official Archive

If you want to review what past dives looked like, the official Krillion archive is the place. Our archive page explains what's in it and how it's organized.
